High level instruction for all ages

Melbourne Drumming is exclusively owned by James Lewis Fox, who has been on the cutting edge of education, inspiring his students for the past 20 years in the world of music, percussion and drum kit.

His aim is to help students reach their own goals outside of the restraints of the typical education system, where so many students become uninspired and disinterested with how music is taught.

Since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts with Honours and a Post Graduate Diploma of Education in 2003, James has been in-demand as both an educator and performer. He was the lead percussionist with Grammar award winning Gotye for almost 10 years, Musical Director, Arranger, Drummer and Band Leader for acclaimed ABC Pop/Jazz Singer Becky Fox, Drummer for the Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary" Tour, featured as a timpani soloist with the VCA Orchestra and been hired as a band leader, arranger, drummer and percussionist for countless corporate events to highlight just a few.

James has vast experience teaching a wide range of students across many disciplines. He has taught at several elite independent schools across Melbourne for the better part of 20 years, including, Haileybury College, Xavier College, Trinity Grammar, St. Catherine's School with several of his top students receiving perfect scores for their VCE Music Performance, Rock School Examinations and National Percussion Eisteddfods.

He has written, arranged, conducted and performed with countless ensembles in every style imaginable and has developed the specialised skill of taiko, an ancient Japanese drumming art form, where he has taught a dedicated taiko class for the past 10 years  as part of the music curriculum at St. Catherine's School.

He has also had diverse experience working in Steiner, Catholic, Government and Outer Region Schools, aiding in their Ensemble and VCE program through various workshops and masterclasses.

A strong passion for James is ensuring his students have the best well-rounded education possible, so they understand the modern requirements of a percussionist/drummer and can survive in the music industry, which is changing as rapidly as technology itself.

Learning at Melbourne Drumming will not only develop your skills in the area of drumming, but prepare you as a musician for todays environment and beyond.
